Lawyers File Class Action Against FG and Army Over ‘Indiscriminate’ Checkpoints in Southeast
A team of lawyers led by Barristers Aloy Ejimakor and Patrick Agazie has filed a class action suit at the Enugu State High Court on June 17, 2026. The claim is brought on behalf of Southeast residents by Chinedu Augustine Agbodike. They argue that the widespread deployment of military checkpoints in Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo and Abia states violates constitutionally guaranteed rights, including dignity, freedom of movement, privacy and protection from discrimination. The suit alleges cases of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, extortion and ethnic profiling at roadblocks. The plaintiffs seek declarations to limit checkpoints to those expressly authorised by law or national emergency, the establishment of an independent mechanism to investigate misconduct, ₦500 billion in damages and a public apology by the Federal Government.
