UN Reports Nearly 300 Journalists Killed Since October 2023, Warns Press Freedom Eroding
The United Nations has raised the alarm over growing violence against media workers ahead of World Press Freedom Day on May 3. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said nearly 300 journalists have been killed since last October and hundreds more are detained or harassed worldwide. He highlighted how defamation, disinformation and anti-terror laws are increasingly misused to intimidate reporters. Türk warned that when attacks on the media become routine, the foundations of peace, security and development begin to decay. The High Commissioner noted that covering armed conflicts — from Gaza to Sudan — poses extreme risks. He also expressed concern over online abuse targeting women journalists and the threats facing reporters who expose corruption or organized crime. UN Secretary-General António Guterres echoed these warnings, calling for stronger protections, thorough investigations and accountability for those who attack or silence journalists. He urged tech companies to combat disinformation and harassment to safeguard independent reporting.
