Oyo Teachers Threaten Statewide School Shutdown, Launch Solidarity Walk for Abducted Pupils
In response to the third week of teacher and student abductions from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, L.A. Basic School, and Baptist Basic School in Oriire Local Government, the Oyo State Teachers Action Group has announced plans to close schools across Oyo State. Solidarity rallies are set for Friday, May 29, at convergence points in Ogbomoso, Iseyin, Oyo, and Ibadan. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Oyo State wing has pledged support for efforts to pressure the government and security agencies into securing the release of abducted staff and pupils. While the NUT did not organise the “Peaceful Solidarity Walk,” its state secretariat confirms its backing of all peaceful actions aimed at ending this crisis. Participants insist that schools remain closed until every abductee is safely freed, arguing that "education cannot thrive in fear." The union had earlier called for closures in vulnerable areas, a request reportedly ignored by the state government.
