Akwa Ibom Governor Taps Aviation Expert Uwem Ekanem to Head New Ministry

Akwa Ibom Governor Taps Aviation Expert Uwem Ekanem to Head New Ministry — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Governor Umo Eno has appointed Uwem Ekanem as Special Adviser on Aviation and Airport Development. He will oversee the state’s newly created ministry until a substantive commissioner is named. The appointment takes effect from May 4, 2026. Ekanem led airport operations at Victor Attah International Airport from 2015 to 2019 and drove commercial growth there between 2009 and 2015. He began his career with Aviation Development Company Plc and managed Virgin Nigeria Airways’ Calabar airport. He holds a Master’s in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Uyo, along with professional aviation certifications. Industry observers say this move underscores Akwa Ibom’s aim to expand infrastructure, attract investment, and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.

Not sure creating a whole new ministry was necessary, e no go just add onto existing departments instead of wasting resources?

To track progress, the government should publish quarterly reports on airport upgrades and community feedback sessions for residents.
