Canada’s Ismael Kone Set for Surgery After Savage World Cup Tackle

Canada’s Ismael Kone Set for Surgery After Savage World Cup Tackle

Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a serious leg injury during Canada’s 6-0 World Cup win over Qatar. The challenge from behind by Qatar’s Assim Madibo led to an immediate red card after the referee upgraded the initial foul. Medical staff fitted Kone with an air cast before he was stretchered off. Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he heard the bone snap and confirmed Kone was rushed to hospital for surgery. Madibo apologised on the pitch and personally to Kone after the match. Marsch called losing his standout midfielder a major blow to Canada’s campaign but praised Kone’s talent and bright future.

It seems Qatar's red card was inevitable given how reckless that tackle from behind looked on replay.

I'm not convinced a straight red always makes the pitch safer; players still risk injury in different ways.
