2026 Federal Budget Earmarks N1.37bn for Boko Haram and Terrorism Trials

2026 Federal Budget Earmarks N1.37bn for Boko Haram and Terrorism Trials

The 2026 Appropriation Bill signed by President Tinubu allocates N1.371bn for Boko Haram, terrorism and related prosecutions under the Federal Ministry of Justice. This is a 159% increase from the N530m approved for similar cases in 2025. Overall defence and security spending rises to N5.41tn, making up about 7.9% of the N68.32tn budget. The Justice Ministry’s capital budget also grows from N6.75bn to N9.725bn, with terrorism trials now consuming over 14% of that spending. Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi has urged the courts to expedite hearings in terrorism and violent crime cases. Security analysts stress the need for transparency in using these funds and better coordination among law enforcement, the judiciary and correctional services to strengthen national security.

Is more money for trials always the answer? E no mean funds alone will tackle deep legal backlogs and corruption issues.

The Ministry of Justice should publish a detailed breakdown of how each naira of the N1.37bn will be spent on terrorism trials.
