Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam Airport Secures First-Ever International Certification
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has awarded an Aerodrome Certificate to Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after confirming its full compliance with national and ICAO safety and operational standards. The certification followed a rigorous five-phase evaluation of airport infrastructure, airside and landside operations, safety management systems, emergency preparedness and personnel training. NCAA’s Director-General praised the collaborative effort between the regulator and FAAN in meeting these stringent requirements. FAAN representatives highlighted recent upgrades—new CCTV systems, perimeter fencing, signage and firefighting vehicles—as crucial to achieving this milestone. Enugu’s Commissioner for Transport said the approval will enhance the state’s bid to become a major aviation hub and support plans to grow its economy to $30 billion. With this licence in hand, the airport can now host international carriers and is poised for expanded global routes and wider-body aircraft operations under its new concession model.
