‘Unbending Steel’: Foluke Falayi Inspires at UNESCO World Book Day
On April 23, Foluke Sijuwola Falayi brought her novel ‘Unbending Steel’ to life at the International UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day event in Lagos. The story follows Tomobi, a resilient boy who bends under pressure but never breaks. It has been adopted by several state ministries of education and now features on school reading lists across Nigeria. With over 20 titles to her name—including Rainy Day, Ada in Port Harcourt and The Reverend’s Daughter—Falayi is a leading voice in African literature. The gathering, organised by the World Literacy Foundation and Sun Books, underscored the power of African stories told by African writers.
