SERAP Appeals ₦100m Defamation Verdict, Seeks Stay of Execution
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has appealed the Federal Capital Territory High Court’s ₦100 million defamation judgment in favour of Department of State Services officials. Filed on 8 May 2026, the appeal includes a motion for a stay of execution pending determination. SERAP plans to amend its Notice of Appeal once it receives a certified copy of the judgment. SERAP contends that Justice Yusuf Halilu’s ruling relied on unsworn witness statements and fundamental legal errors. It argues the decision is perverse, procedurally flawed, and unsupported by evidence. The organisation is asking the Court of Appeal to set aside the entire judgment, dismiss the substantive suit (CV/4547/2024), and overturn orders for damages, public apologies, litigation costs and post-judgment interest.
