Kalika: African Teams Impress at World Cup 2026, but Super Eagles Would Have Done Better

Kalika: African Teams Impress at World Cup 2026, but Super Eagles Would Have Done Better

Simon Kalika, a Dutch coach and former assistant with Nigeria’s Flying Eagles and Olympic team, has applauded the strong showings of African sides at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. He spoke exclusively about how debutants like Cape Verde and outsiders such as DR Congo have dazzled and signalled Africa’s closing gap with traditional football powers. Egypt and Morocco also reached the Round of 16, underlining the continent’s progress. Reflecting on Nigeria’s absence, Kalika insisted the Super Eagles would have outshone all other African representatives had they qualified. “Nigeria is exceptionally blessed with talent,” he said. “It’s painful the Super Eagles missed out, because they could have been one of the tournament’s most gifted sides.”

It's impressive to see debutants perform well, yet it feels like tournament luck might have influenced those early results.

I agree; those debutants truly impressed, though you can't overlook how luck subtly shaped early matchups.

I respect Kalika's view, but saying the Super Eagles would outperform every African side feels a bit overstated without seeing those matches.

Instead of debating hypotheticals, we should focus on improving local leagues and youth development to boost Nigeria's next World Cup squad.
