How I Overcame Money Fears at 25
Every week Zikoko interviews Nigerians about their money lives. I’m 25 and first felt money’s weight in 2018 when I spent my school fees on a phone. I missed exams, carried over courses and secretly borrowed from future tuition to clear the debt. To pay bills, I worked as a receptionist, an intern, and a personal assistant — all while battling workplace harassment. In 2024 I landed a stable role at a medical group earning ₦300k. But a failed skincare business, surprise shipping fees and a sudden eviction drove my debt back to ₦900k. Now I track every naira. I’ve locked away savings, cut Netflix, use a student-rate Spotify plan and walk part of my commute. I plan to invest small amounts and build an emergency fund while clearing my debt. Money still scares me, but careful budgeting gives me confidence. My next goal is to earn ₦1m a month, break free from the rat race and finally feel financially secure.
