Thousands in Oyo Protest School Kidnappings, Demand Government Action
Thousands of residents, teachers and students took to the streets in Oyo State. They denounced the kidnapping of over 46 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. The protest paralysed parts of Ibadan and Ogbomoso. At Mokola Roundabout, demonstrators held placards and marched to the Agodi Secretariat and Government House. In Ogbomoso, protesters occupied major roads and accused authorities of failing to secure a rescue operation. The Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo declared an indefinite strike, insisting schools cannot operate under unsafe conditions. Protesters also voiced frustration over rising food prices and economic hardship. Groups involved include the Take-It-Back Movement, NANS, labour activists and teachers’ organisations. While officials appealed for calm and promised action, the crowd insisted that words are no longer enough and demanded immediate results. What urgent measures should authorities adopt to protect students and teachers?
