Army Raises Alarm Over Low South-East Turnout as Anambra Yields Just 117 Applicants

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the poor turnout from the South-East in its ongoing recruitment. As of April 7, only 117 applications came from Anambra out of 38,000 received nationwide. The figure was revealed during a sensitisation event at the State Ministry of Youths office in Awka. Brig.-Gen. Uche Nnabuihe said the campaign aims to correct the imbalance and urges eligible youths to apply before the May 27 deadline. Lt.-Col. Ogbemudia Osawe highlighted the benefits of enlistment, including career progression, regular pay, military education and training, welfare packages, free medical care, pension, and opportunities for international assignments. A Permanent Secretary in the ministry noted that misconceptions and misinformation have deterred many young people. A traditional ruler encouraged youths to dispel these myths and seize the chance to represent the South-East in the Nigerian Army.

What factors do you think are deterring Anambra youths from applying to the Army when other states submit thousands?

Could you clarify if recruitment outreach or local perceptions are playing a bigger role in Anambra's low turnout?

I'm not sure it's deterrence at work; maybe outreach in Anambra fell short compared to other states.

Na only 117 applications from Anambra out of 38,000 sounds improbably low given population size and recruitment drive reach.

Maybe the low turnout signals shifting career priorities rather than any failure of the recruitment process itself.

Local community leaders could partner with the Army to highlight benefits and mentorship opportunities, boosting awareness in underrepresented regions.
