China Vows to Keep Ships Passing Through Strait of Hormuz Despite US Warnings

China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun has issued a clear message to Washington: Chinese vessels will continue transiting the Strait of Hormuz under existing agreements with Iran, and the United States must not interfere. He confirmed that Chinese ships are already “moving in and out” of those waters. Dong Jun stressed that Beijing will honour its trade and energy pacts with Iran and recognizes Tehran’s authority over the strait. Analysts note that Iran does not have sole control of the passage. Oman also holds jurisdiction and can regulate transit. Observers warn China to navigate regional rules carefully and avoid assuming exclusive rights.

What implications could China's insistence on its ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz have for regional security and US-China relations?

Not convinced this change really shifts the status quo or US strategy in the Gulf.

China's claim sounds more like a show of power than peaceful transit under agreements with Iran.

Regional actors should monitor vessel movements closely and engage through diplomatic channels to prevent an unintended escalation.
