Civil Society Groups Praise Peaceful, Transparent Enugu North Senatorial By-election

Civil Society Groups Praise Peaceful, Transparent Enugu North Senatorial By-election — 1 of 3
1 / 3

A coalition of civil society organisations has applauded the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election. They described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and reflective of the people’s will. The observer groups noted some technical issues with the BVAS machines and delays in logistics. They reported no shortage of voting materials and confirmed that sensitive and non-sensitive items reached all polling units as scheduled. APC’s Ikeje Asogwa won with 162,360 votes, while PDP candidate Nestor Ezeme secured 9,299 votes. Seven parties took part across six local government areas, covering 102 wards and over 184,000 accredited voters. The coalition urged INEC to refine BVAS performance ahead of 2027 and strengthen its logistics framework. It also called for more balanced security deployment in remote communities and appealed to all candidates to accept the outcome as the true will of the people.

What do you think caused those BVAS machine delays, and could we prevent similar snags in future elections?

Can you share any clues about what might have triggered those BVAS delays this time around?

It's encouraging that observers praised the transparency, but reports of technical hiccups suggest the process wasn't entirely flawless.

Praise is fine, but brushing off those machine glitches as minor concerns risks overlooking problems that could influence voter confidence.

We need regular training for BVAS operators, plus standby power banks and backup plans so polling no go delay again.
