Nigerian Couple Jailed in UK Over £650k TfL Data Breach and Tax Scam

Nigerian Couple Jailed in UK Over £650k TfL Data Breach and Tax Scam — 1 of 4
1 / 4

A Nigerian couple working in the UK have been sentenced to three years and nine months after stealing personal information from more than 100 Transport for London employees. Luciana Akanbi, a former HR advisor at TfL, accessed 107 colleagues’ records and used the data of 40 staff to make 139 false tax rebate claims totalling nearly £650,000. HMRC lost over £433,000 before the fraud was uncovered. Judge David Miller described it as the worst data breach in TfL’s history, noting the impact on staff morale and public funds. He highlighted a complex laundering scheme and the couple’s roles in orchestrating the offence. TfL and HMRC have tightened data security and urged anyone aware of tax fraud to come forward. Both organisations praised the successful prosecution and warned that similar crimes will be met with firm action.

I understand the worry, but just tougher penalties won't stop misuse. Regular auditing and staff training matter more.

It's striking that a trusted HR advisor could access so many records undetected, suggesting serious gaps in TfL's internal controls.

We jump to punish employees, but what about the systems that let one person grab 107 records? Shouldn't accountability start higher up?

Organisations must enforce strict role-based access and regular audits to prevent data theft. Simple log reviews could catch anomalies early.
