FG Decries Diaspora ‘Eze Ndigbo’ Coronations as Embarrassing

By Fortune Abang The Federal Government has criticized the coronation and activities of Eze Ndigbo in foreign countries as embarrassing. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, spoke out ahead of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Imeobi meeting in Enugu. She warned that these self-styled titles have sparked friction both within Igbo communities and with their host societies. Violent protests in South Africa followed the controversial crowning of Solomon Eziko in East London, resulting in looting, vehicle torching, and injuries. Ohanaeze’s National Executive Committee, in collaboration with the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, has abolished the concept of Eze Igbo outside Igboland. The minister urged Nigerians abroad to celebrate their heritage without challenging local traditions. She also recalled a similar crisis in Ghana and warned that sanctions may apply to anyone flouting the ban. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will help spread this directive through its missions worldwide.

Aren't they overlooking diaspora efforts and cultural pride by calling it embarrassing? Sounds dismissive more than considerate.

The FG's criticism comes just before the Ohanaeze Imeobi meeting, raising questions about political timing and underlying motives.

It's easy to dismiss those ceremonies as embarrassing, but maybe they strengthen Igbo identity within the diaspora.

Local groups should engage diaspora leaders directly and clarify roles before meetings to prevent public criticism from officials.
