U.S. Officials Ordered to Dump Gifts, Pins and Burner Phones Before Boarding Air Force One
President Trump and his delegation left Beijing after two days of talks with President Xi Jinping. Before boarding Air Force One, White House staff and reporters were asked to surrender all Chinese-issued items, including burner phones, credential badges and lapel pins. Those traveling on the presidential jet dropped the items in a bin at the foot of the stairs. No official explanation was given, but security concerns and the risk of bugging are believed to be the reason. U.S.–China relations remain strained over trade, technology and espionage allegations. The White House has not commented further on the directive.
