MTN CEO Insists Unlimited Data Is Impossible Without Huge Cost, Nigerians Abroad Push Back

MTN CEO Insists Unlimited Data Is Impossible Without Huge Cost, Nigerians Abroad Push Back

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Karl Toriola said truly unlimited mobile data plans don’t exist anywhere in the world unless customers pay a premium rate. He argued networks can’t build enough capacity to support unlimited use while maintaining decent service quality. Nigerians living overseas have challenged this claim. They shared screenshots showing their unlimited data subscriptions in countries like the UK cost no more than a few hours’ wages at minimum pay. Many took to social media to highlight how affordable unlimited plans can be abroad.

Are you asking whether any carrier can avoid speed restrictions during high usage periods entirely?

Karl's point about capacity limits makes sense, but I dey wonder how they measure true network load and the breakdown of those premium costs.

I'm not convinced that only premium subscribers benefit; there should be midrange plans that balance price and fair usage.

Home and remote workers can manage budgets by monitoring daily usage, switching off background data, and choosing limited plans with bundles they actually need.
