Should the US Air Drop Weapons to Nigeria’s Middle Belt Like It Did for the Kurds?
The Kurds have long sought autonomy from Turkey, Iran and Iraq. They are well armed, in part because the US supplied weapons directly to their leaders. Could the same support help Nigeria’s Middle Belt? If guns and basic training were delivered to local leaders, many communities could defend themselves within days while waiting for regional police to arrive. Local groups should also watch for outsiders joining new security units. Strong neighbourhood structures are more vital now than ever.
