Southwest States Boost Flood Defences with Dredging and Awareness Campaigns
Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states have stepped up flood prevention as the 2026 rainy season peaks. Authorities are carrying out dredging, desilting, drain construction and community sensitisation to reduce flood risk. In Ekiti, the state environmental agency has spent about ₦475.2 million over 18 months on dredging waterways in Ado-Ekiti. Illegal structures blocking channels have been demolished and new amphibious excavators acquired under a World Bank-assisted project. Osun’s government now approves annual dredging of waterways. Clearance of drainage channels and public education have helped the state avoid major flooding in recent years. Relief materials are pre-positioned in identified flashpoints like Ila-Orangun, Aiyegbaju and Iragbiji. Ondo reports its flood prevention plan is 80 percent complete. The state continues to desilt drains, clear waterways and mobilise residents against indiscriminate dumping to keep flood-prone areas safe.
