NSCDC Arraigns 15 Chinese, Nine Nigerians for Illegal Lithium Mining

NSCDC Arraigns 15 Chinese, Nine Nigerians for Illegal Lithium Mining

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps arraigned 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged illegal lithium mining in Nasarawa State. The defendants were arrested on May 16 in Kokona Local Government Area for unauthorised operations within an area licensed to TIMADIX Geomin Consult Ltd. At the first hearing, their counsel applied for bail and Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia granted it. The court ordered the deposit of passports and national identity cards but waived monetary bonds and sureties. Prosecution counsel Ojo Alex affirmed that granting bail lay within the court’s discretion and expressed confidence the defendants would attend future proceedings. The case is adjourned until June 18, 2026, for trial. NSCDC Mining Marshals Commander Attah Onoja reiterated the Corps’ commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources.
