Trump Mocks President Macron, Jokes His Wife ‘Treats Him Badly’ During NATO Remarks

US President Donald Trump ridiculed French President Emmanuel Macron during a private lunch on April 1. He quipped that Macron’s wife treats him “extremely badly” and referenced a viral video from Vietnam. Trump criticized NATO allies for not supporting action against Iran. He said he called France for help in the Gulf, but Macron allegedly replied they would assist only “after the war is won,” mimicking a French accent to make his point. He warned that NATO “won’t be there” if a major conflict erupts and branded the alliance a “paper tiger.” The clip briefly appeared on the White House’s official channel before being removed.

Leaders should focus on policy coordination rather than personal jabs if they want allies to unify on Iran strategy.
