Jordan Slams Israel’s Takeover of Greek Orthodox Church Land in East Jerusalem

Jordan has condemned Israel’s seizure of land belonging to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Silwan, East Jerusalem. The government called the action a flagrant violation of international law and a breach of the historical status quo. A foreign ministry spokesperson said Israel holds no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or its Christian and Islamic sanctities. He described the measures as unilateral and illegitimate. Israeli authorities took control of the site on Monday, expelling the Patriarchate’s representative, confiscating equipment, uprooting trees, and fencing the area. Jordan reiterated that only an independent Palestinian state can bring lasting peace and stability in the region.

What do people think this Jordan condemnation means for Israel's international standing, especially regarding historical sites and broader Middle East tensions?

I hear you, this diss from Jordan definitely puts Israel's reputation on shaky ground, especially around those historic sites.

Jordan's statement heavily emphasizes international law, but it's unclear how this will change any ground realities in East Jerusalem's contested landscape.

I'm not convinced this move by Jordan is purely about heritage; it feels like another layer of regional political posturing at Israel's expense.

A useful step might be for international observers to review the legal status of church properties in Silwan before escalating any diplomatic protests.
