Why State Police Is a Mirage in Nigeria’s Security Crisis
We’ve heard the promises of local government autonomy before. It was sold as a miracle cure for grassroots development. Two years on, councils like Osun State still struggle without funds. Salaries and projects are stalled. Now we’re being sold another quick fix: state police. The same government that presided over one of Nigeria’s worst security crises thinks a new force under governors will solve everything. Yet it ignores the real drivers of instability—soaring inflation, unemployment, collapsing naira, and draconian economic policies. We already have an understaffed, underpaid police, deployed military, NSCDC, vigilante groups, and regional outfits like Amotekun. None have stemmed the tide of violence. Until we address deep economic and governance failures and guard against political abuse of power, state police will be just another overhyped promise.
