‘Sweet Poison’: CAPPA’s New Film Exposes Nigeria’s Sugary Drink Health Crisis
CAPPA has released a 20-minute documentary, “Sweet Poison,” to highlight how sugar-sweetened beverages have become a public health and environmental threat in Nigeria. The film combines expert analysis with personal stories—from medical professionals and NCD patients to traders and students—to show how aggressive marketing has driven up cases of diabetes, hypertension and obesity. It also examines the industry’s plastic pollution and resource-intensive practices. CAPPA challenges the current N10 per litre sugar-drink excise tax as too weak. The group calls for a stronger levy—up to 50% of the retail price or at least 20%—with revenues earmarked for health initiatives. The documentary airs nationwide following a Lagos media screening and aims to push policymakers to act.
