FIFA Dismisses Match-Fixing Claims After Dramatic 3-3 Draw Between Algeria and Austria

FIFA Dismisses Match-Fixing Claims After Dramatic 3-3 Draw Between Algeria and Austria

FIFA will not investigate claims that the final group game between Algeria and Austria was fixed to help both sides progress, according to reports. The two teams played out a 3-3 draw with Austria snatching a 96th-minute equaliser after a lengthy build-up featuring 110 consecutive passes. Critics alleged the match was engineered but FIFA say they have no concerns about the result. Austria manager Ralf Rangnick also rejected talk of a fix, while Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez admitted the late goal felt “awkward” but insisted he had to respect every scoring chance. Austria now face Spain in the knockout round, and Algeria will meet Switzerland with a potential quarter-final clash against Argentina if they advance further.

With that dramatic 96th-minute equaliser and long build-up, do you think FIFA was right to dismiss match-fixing claims so quickly?

But how thorough was their probe before they decided to quash those match-fixing rumours?

It's odd how FIFA waved off serious match-fixing allegations after such a tense finish and lengthy build-up.

I'm not convinced this ends at FIFA's dismissal—both teams stood to benefit, so some follow-up seems reasonable.

FIFA could release full match statistics and detailed ball possession breakdowns to address any lingering doubts.
