Nearly 3,000 Foreign Nationals Repatriated from South Africa amid Immigration Enforcement

Nearly 3,000 Foreign Nationals Repatriated from South Africa amid Immigration Enforcement

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs says 2,745 foreign nationals returned home voluntarily over the past two weeks under intensified immigration enforcement. The figure includes 958 Ghanaians, 640 Malawians, 583 Mozambicans, 296 Zimbabweans and 268 Nigerians. Authorities report that most were found in breach of immigration regulations by overstaying visas or holding expired permits. Deputy Director-General for Operations Thulani Mavuso explained that overseas missions request assistance, after which officials verify statuses and coordinate departures. The repatriations follow a series of anti-immigration protests in several communities. Nigerian nationals processed under the programme have been declared undesirable and will be barred from re-entering South Africa for five years.

I totally agree! Better make am voluntary so everyone travels back on their own terms.

Noticing that 958 Ghanaians topped the list of voluntary returns raises concerns about uneven enforcement across different nationalities.

I'm not convinced all those returns were truly voluntary—some might have felt pressured by sudden raids and deportation threats.

Local NGOs and diaspora networks should coordinate to offer legal guidance and resettlement support for those returning to avoid potential hardships.
