Sen. Essien Praises VAIA Upgrade as Africa’s Best, Credits Leadership Continuity
Former Deputy Chief Whip Sen. Ibok Essien has described the newly upgraded Victor Attah International Airport terminal as Africa’s best. He praised Gov. Umo Eno for sustaining and completing a vision that now places Akwa Ibom on the global aviation map. Essien recalled that early efforts to secure federal approval during President Obasanjo’s administration met stiff resistance. He challenged the president on the Senate floor and led sustained advocacy that ultimately paved the way for the airport project. Highlighting its technical excellence and capacity for heavy passenger traffic, the senator said the terminal reflects long-term infrastructure thinking. He expects the facility to drive revenue growth, deepen tourism, attract investors and create jobs across key sectors. The maiden international flight ceremony, which officially opened full international operations, drew top government officials, aviation stakeholders and dignitaries from within and outside the state.
