Mette Frederiksen Secures Third Term with New Centre-Left Coalition
Mette Frederiksen has reached an agreement to form a centre-left minority government. The deal ends months of uncertainty after the March election, which returned 12 parties to parliament. Her Social Democrats lost their majority but remained the largest party with 38 of 179 seats. After more than two months of negotiations, Frederiksen gained enough support to stay in office. Animal welfare was a key campaign issue. The new government will include the Social Liberals, Left Greens and Moderates, relying on the far-left Red-Green Alliance for a majority when needed. Immediate priorities include diplomatic engagement over Greenland and accelerating Denmark’s military expansion amid security concerns linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Ministers will be announced later this week.
