Edo Government Arrests Orphanage Operator for ₦2m Adoption Scam

Edo Government Arrests Orphanage Operator for ₦2m Adoption Scam — 1 of 9
1 / 9

A woman suspected of running an unlicensed orphanage in Afuze, Owan East LGA, has been arrested by Edo State authorities. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development confirmed the operator was handed over to the police for investigation. The case began when an adoption applicant reported paying an initial ₦250,000 processing fee and then being told to pay up to ₦2 million before receiving a child. A ministry inquiry found the documents used were forged on old letterhead. Investigators traced the fake letters to a staff member in the Social Welfare Department of Owan East Local Government. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the official and any other individuals involved. All suspects will face prosecution under state law.
