Nigeria Secures 534,000 Tonnes of 2026 Fertilizer, Saves ₦61.6bn with Early Purchase

Nigeria has locked in enough fertilizer raw materials for the 2026 wet season by securing nine vessels carrying 407,304 metric tonnes early. Combined with existing stocks, 534,219 metric tonnes are now available for NPK production nationwide. This strategy under the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative saved about $44 million (roughly ₦61.6 billion) compared with current global prices. By mid-April, over 323,000 tonnes had reached blending plants and more than 198,000 tonnes were already distributed ahead of peak planting. The initiative aims to protect farmers from market shocks and ensure affordable fertilizer through timely procurement and strong supply arrangements. Raw materials are supplied to 94 registered blending plants across the country to boost local production and food security.

While early procurement may save money upfront, I'm uneasy about whether our distribution network can handle such volume without waste.

Those savings might look impressive, but without addressing lingering supply chain bottlenecks, we risk delays that could undermine the entire effort.

Farmers and local suppliers should coordinate early to inspect storage space and ensure say warehouses don ready for bulk fertilizer.
