Ambassador Obie Urges Peace and Unity on Democracy Day
As Nigeria observes Democracy Day on June 12, Ambassador Dr. Leonard Obie sends warm greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad. He recalls the historic 1993 election and honours Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other democracy advocates whose sacrifices paved the way for civilian rule. Highlighting rising economic hardship, insecurity and social pressures, he calls on the president, governors, legislators and all stakeholders to prioritise people-centred governance, dialogue and national peace over political or ethnic interests. With the 2027 general elections approaching, he warns that political competition must never lead to violence or division. He urges intensified efforts to protect communities, strengthen public safety and build open, accountable leadership. He concludes that Nigeria’s diversity is its greatest strength and calls on all citizens and leaders to reject violence, embrace hope and recommit to building a nation of justice, peace and opportunity for everyone.
