CJN Urges Accurate Reporting of Court Proceedings to Protect Rule of Law
The Chief Justice of Nigeria highlighted the dangers of incomplete or sensational court reporting. She said that even well-reasoned judgments only serve justice when the public understands them correctly. Represented at a media conference by the National Judicial Institute, she called on judiciary correspondents to practise balanced, professional reporting. Misinterpretation, she warned, can erode public trust and weaken democratic institutions. The Attorney-General also addressed the gathering, urging journalists to resist divisive political pressures ahead of the 2027 elections. He stressed the media’s role in reinforcing unity and warned that hate speech and violence must be stopped. The conference chair added a call for judicial reforms to avoid conflicting court orders and strengthen the justice system as elections approach.
