Federal Rep Warns of Ebola Risk, Demands Urgent NCDC Funding
The Member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency raised a motion urging the federal government to immediately release funds to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He warned that a recent Ebola outbreak in the DRC’s Ituri Province increases the risk of importation into Nigeria. He noted that the rare Bundibugyo strain has no licensed vaccine or treatment. Porous borders and limited surveillance make the country vulnerable. Although the NCDC activated emergency measures on May 25, 2026, inadequate funding has weakened its readiness. Contractors remain unpaid and key projects are stalled. Laboratory reagents, biosafety facilities, and intensive care resources are in short supply. Rapid response teams lack proper training and equipment. The motion calls on the Executive branch to honour budget allocations and on oversight committees to ensure accountability. It also urges Port Health and border authorities to step up surveillance. Proactive investment in public health infrastructure, the lawmaker said, is crucial to prevent deadly outbreaks.
