Nwabali Acknowledges Okoye's Rise: 'Not Everybody Will Keep' Nigeria's No.1 Jersey

Nwabali Acknowledges Okoye's Rise: 'Not Everybody Will Keep' Nigeria's No.1 Jersey — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Former Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has offered his thoughts on Maduka Okoye’s recent promotion to Super Eagles’ number one spot. He reminded fans that national team places are highly competitive, noting, “It’s not everybody that will keep. A lot of players need to play also.” Since his standout showing at the Africa Cup of Nations, Nwabali has parted ways with Chippa United and remains a free agent despite links to clubs in South Africa and Tanzania. His national team absence has opened the door for Okoye to step in. Okoye impressed with world-class saves against Portugal and Poland, earning coach Eric Chelle’s trust. As the summer transfer window opens, Nwabali will seek a new club to stake his claim for a Super Eagles return.

Do you think Okoye's performance under pressure will shape who keeps the No.1 jersey?

It's true the goalkeeping spot is a revolving door, but fans often expect players to hold that jersey for years.

Nwabali says spots are competitive, but I'd argue Okoye already has the consistency to fend off rivals for now.

If you want to keep that jersey, focus on regular training intensity and match readiness over flashy saves.
