Falana Warns Vote-Buying Undermines ‘One Man, One Vote’ in Nigeria
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana says Nigeria’s democracy is hollow when ballots are bought by moneyed interests. He warned that the upcoming 2027 elections face a defining test unless citizens’ votes truly count. Speaking at an event honouring late constitutional defender Alao Aka-Bashorun, Falana argued that regular elections mean little if Nigerians doubt their ballots. He blamed vote-buying, abuse of incumbency, and manipulation of electoral processes for eroding trust and democratic legitimacy. Falana urged citizens to use the Freedom of Information Act to demand transparency. He called on Nigerians to make 2027 not only another election cycle but a renewed commitment to economic justice, accountability, and constitutional governance.
