The Unmerciful Servant: A Powerful Lesson in Forgiveness
In Matthew 18:21-35, Peter asks Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who sins against him. Jesus replies not just seven times, but seventy-seven times, illustrating boundless mercy. Jesus then tells of a king settling accounts with his servants. One servant owes an enormous debt and pleads for patience. The king forgives him completely. But that same servant refuses mercy to a fellow servant who owes much less. When the king learns of this cruelty, he shows that our willingness to forgive others reflects the mercy God offers us. This parable reminds us that true forgiveness must come from the heart, extending to others the grace we ourselves have received.
