Ex-NHIS Chief Claims El-Rufai Is Tinubu’s Political Prisoner

Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, told SYMFONI TV that Nasir El-Rufai’s detention is driven by political rivalry rather than genuine legal concerns. He noted that El-Rufai once backed President Bola Tinubu’s rise but later fell out with him. Yusuf argued this fracture in their relationship may explain the charges against the ex-governor, which he and other legal experts find weak. Yusuf warned that using the courts to settle political disputes sets a dangerous precedent. He expressed worry about security agencies being used to silence opponents and undermining democratic debate. “I want to tell the world, Nasiru El-Rufai is President Bola Tinubu’s political prisoner, end of story. I’ve seen the charges, it’s laughable,” he declared.

I doubt it's all political. Some legal issues must be taken seriously before jumping to conclusions about motives.

Yusuf's claim suggests a strong political motive behind the arrest, especially given El-Rufai's switch from supporter to critic of Tinubu.

Labeling him a political prisoner overlooks the side that insists his detention responds to legitimate legal concerns, even if politics plays a role.

Regardless of motive, ensuring transparent legal procedures and a thorough public trial might help both sides restore trust.
