Rivers Governor Fubara Passes APC Screening, Cleared for May 2026 Primary

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been screened and cleared by the APC committee ahead of next year’s governorship primary. The exercise took place at the Plateau Governors Lodge in Abuja on Sunday, May 10, 2026. He was one of three serving governors whose credentials were verified and can now contest the APC primary set for May 21. Fubara’s defection from the PDP intensified tensions with his predecessor, Minister Nyesom Wike. A coalition of APC stakeholders, led by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, supported his bid by purchasing his nomination forms. He faces a strong challenge from Kingsley Chinda, a Wike ally and Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. All key APC primaries wrap up around mid-May ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It looks like screening three sitting governors highlights a potential bias towards established incumbents rather than emerging leaders.

Screening clearance doesn't guarantee voter support; the real test will be grassroots reception and independent polling results closer to the primary.

Local campaign teams should begin community outreach planning now that Fubara's clearance is official; early engagement could sway undecided voters.
