Democracy Day Appeal: Minister Urges Support for 258 Nigerians Returning from South Africa

Democracy Day Appeal: Minister Urges Support for 258 Nigerians Returning from South Africa

On Democracy Day, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction called on Nigerians to welcome the 258 citizens repatriated from South Africa. He highlighted that democracy thrives when society cares for its most vulnerable members. He thanked the Federal Government and President Tinubu for facilitating the safe return but stressed that reintegration is a shared responsibility. Communities, faith groups, businesses, and state governments were urged to offer job opportunities, skills training, and emotional support. Profiling showed most returnees left for economic reasons, underlining the need for local empowerment and social protection. The Minister praised collaborative efforts by national agencies, private partners, and NGOs in handling reception, health screening, and livelihood assistance. He called on all Nigerians to sustain these interventions and ensure no one is left behind.

How can ordinary citizens best welcome the 258 returned Nigerians and ensure they feel supported in their communities?

I agree, simple welcome gatherings and clear information about local services can really help new returnees feel at home.

I'm not fully convinced that promised funds will actually reach each returnee without stricter oversight.

While the appeal is noble, is democracy really strengthened through repatriation ceremonies when basic infrastructure remains so neglected?

Local community groups can partner with the ministry to provide temporary shelter, psychosocial support and job training for returning citizens.
