Edo Govt Proposes Special Courts to Fast-Track Kidnapping and Cultism Trials
The Edo State Judiciary may soon establish Special Courts to speed up trials for kidnapping and cultism across the state. Governor Monday Okpebholo has reportedly asked the Chief Judge to nominate a panel of judges to sit on the new court. If approved, it will handle related criminal cases on an accelerated schedule to reduce delays and strengthen justice delivery. The proposal follows the governor’s June 18 announcement at the Edo State Police Command in Benin City, where he pledged swift prosecution of offenders. Lawmakers, including Senator Joseph Ikpea of Edo Central, have backed the initiative as a decisive response to rising insecurity. It remains unclear when the Chief Judge’s office will act on the request or how soon the court will be officially constituted.
