NDLEA Seizes 5.3 Million kg of Drugs Valued at ₦1.5 Trillion in 18 Months
Retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa said the NDLEA intercepted more than 5.3 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs worth about ₦1.5 trillion over the past 18 months. He made the disclosure at the climax of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event in Abuja. He highlighted intelligence-driven operations that dismantled major cartels in collaboration with the US DEA and European agencies. A notorious syndicate led by a 63-year-old Nigerian kingpin and accomplices from Mexico and Nigeria was neutralised, and an industrial-scale meth lab was uncovered in Oyo State. In the same period, NDLEA recorded 29,262 arrests, secured 5,225 convictions and conducted over 6,600 public awareness programmes, reaching nearly five million Nigerians. Counselling and rehabilitation services were provided to more than 13,500 drug users across 31 centres. Marwa praised President Tinubu, international partners and agency personnel for their support. The event also featured an inter-secondary school essay competition, with top prizes awarded to students from Enugu, Yola and Abia.
