Court Orders Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Pay ₦1bn to Yahaya Bello for Defamation

Court Orders Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Pay ₦1bn to Yahaya Bello for Defamation

Justice Ibrahim of the Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has ordered Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to pay N1 billion in damages to former Governor Yahaya Bello. Bello sued over a November 2022 interview on Arise TV. The court dismissed jurisdictional objections and an appeal by the senator. It affirmed that no FCT court had a suit against Bello personally. The judge found her remarks calling him a murderer and a terror were defamatory. A perpetual injunction now bars Akpoti-Uduaghan and her associates from repeating those statements on any TV or radio station. The one billion naira award was granted based on the balance of probabilities in favor of the claimant.

Demanding ₦1bn seems excessive when public figures often face robust criticism as part of their roles.
