Yoruba Widow’s Tale of Compassion Unites Tribes Online
I came across a touching story that’s trending in Nigerian social spaces. A Yoruba widow moved into the uncompleted building her late husband began because she couldn’t afford rising rent. She shared her plight online, and many promised help but never delivered. Then an Igbo man living outside Lagos stepped forward and sent her one million naira. His generosity moved her to tears, and she returned online to share her gratitude. Others have since started making smaller contributions. This story stood out to me because it clashes with a common slogan I hear: “An Igbo man will never become president of Nigeria.” Some Yoruba repeat this with pride, clinging to stale grievances from 1966. Yet here we see true compassion crossing tribal lines. I shared this to remind us that love and unity matter more than politics. Insult me or dismiss it if you like, but I believe our shared humanity will heal old wounds over time.
