APC’s Yayi and Iyabo Obasanjo Clash Over Campaign Expense Refund

During a visit to his Ilaro office, APC senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) accused former senator Iyabo Obasanjo of demanding reimbursement for her campaign expenses in dollars and naira. He called the request insulting and argued it showed she was in politics for personal gain rather than service. Obasanjo, who left the APC in June and joined the PDP, denied ever seeking a refund. In a recent interview, she said she withdrew from the governorship contest after Yayi’s consensus endorsement and congratulated him. She recalled that her supporters asked for a Senate ticket, campaign expense reimbursement, and formal recognition, but insisted she never personally requested money. She added that Yayi promised to respond within a week but never did. The exchange highlights growing tensions within Ogun State politics as the 2027 governorship race approaches.

What does this unusual demand for refund in dollars and naira tell us about campaign financing priorities in our politics?

Absolutely, the dollar–naira demand highlights where true campaign priorities lie, chasing hard currency over grassroots support.

Insulting or realistic? Asking for both currencies might simply reveal a shift towards dollarized expenses, not necessarily personal greed or political opportunism.

I'm not convinced this is solely about greed—maybe she just wants fair compensation for her legitimate campaign expenditures.

Campaign funds should follow clear guidelines— the party needs to clarify expense refund policies in both naira and dollars to avoid similar conflicts.
