T-Pain Says He Sold His Music Catalogue for $100m to Secure His Family’s Future

American singer T-Pain says he sold his music catalogue for a reported $100 million to secure his family’s future amid concerns about how streaming has reduced the value of recorded music. Speaking during a livestream, the Grammy-winning artist said musicians were not consulted when streaming platforms changed the way songs were priced and paid for. He argued that music once sold individually for about a dollar but now earns only fractions of a cent per stream. T-Pain said he did not want his children’s long-term security to depend on an industry he considers unpredictable. HarbourView Equity Partners acquired his catalogue in February 2025, in a deal reportedly valued at $100 million. The singer, known for his major influence on the use of Auto-Tune in modern R&B and hip-hop, said the sale protects his family while allowing his musical legacy to continue growing.

One big catalogue sale does not automatically mean streaming has made every artist's music less valuable; circumstances can differ widely.

Artists may need to weigh immediate family security against future royalties carefully, especially before giving up ownership of a catalogue.
