Lagos Taskforce Arrests 50 Suspects in Statewide Sanitation Drive

Lagos Taskforce Arrests 50 Suspects in Statewide Sanitation Drive

Lagos State’s Environmental and Special Offences Unit reported the arrest of 50 individuals during its latest sanitation enforcement operation. The action targeted hotspots with recurring environmental violations across Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, the Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Ijora Causeway, the Ijora under bridge and Iddo. Officials noted overall compliance with restrictions on vehicular movement and commercial activities, though some residents did not fully cooperate. Another group of 50 people were detained along the Lekki–Epe Expressway for allegedly disturbing public peace and damaging public infrastructure. The monthly exercise aims to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, street trading and other infractions under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law, 2017. All suspects will be charged to court. The taskforce urged youths to avoid street football during sanitation hours and called on communities to maintain a cleaner, safer Lagos.

Fifty arrests might look impressive, yet it does little to fix the persistent dumping issues across those districts.

I'm not convinced mass arrests alone will curb environmental violations without clear follow-up measures or community education in those areas.

Local neighborhood groups should partner with the task force to map hotspots and run awareness campaigns before enforcement actions begin.
