Lagos Denies Granting Transport Unions Arrest Powers in Waste Enforcement
The Lagos State Government has rejected reports that members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers were authorised to enforce environmental laws or arrest offenders. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources explained that the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps remains the only agency empowered to handle sanitation enforcement. No other body has legal arrest powers for environmental violations. Meetings with transport operators were aimed at improving waste management and hygiene in motor parks and garages, not at assigning enforcement duties. Residents are urged to ignore social media rumours and follow official government channels for accurate updates on waste management policies.
