Presidency Admits 2024 Error in Claim of ISIS Commander’s Death
The Presidency has acknowledged a mistake in a previous military announcement that top ISIS commander Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki was killed in early 2024. Initially reported by Defence Headquarters, the commander’s death was confirmed in a recent joint Nigerian-American operation. A review found the 2024 listing was due to misidentification amid the fog of counterinsurgency operations near Birnin Gwari Forest. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga explained that new intelligence shows Al-Manuki operated elsewhere and that multiple sources now confirm his neutralisation. Officials emphasise that this latest mission relied on months of surveillance, communications monitoring and human intelligence. They say robust verification steps distinguish this operation from prior reports that required later correction.
